The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry is working in the state capitol to restore Amtrak’s service across the state to two trains per day.
In January, Amtrak reduced Missouri River Runner service to just one train per day citing a loss of COVID-19 relief funding. The line connects Kansas City to St. Louis with stops at eight cities in between.
The trains provide a vital link for business, tourism and higher education institutions along the 283-mile route. The service generates $208 million in economic activity according to an impact study by the Missouri Department of Transportation.
Before the pandemic, the line served roughly 170,000 passengers per year.
During a hearing on January 18, the Missouri Chamber testified in support of the state investing $2.5 million to restore the route to its regular service.
