Missouri Chamber supports bill to prevent local government overreach

The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry is backing legislation to prevent government overreach into business practices at the local level.

HB 443, sponsored by Rep. Sherri Gallick (R-Belton), was heard by the House Local Government Committee.

Gallick’s bill says that local governments cannot pass policies or ordinances on several employment-related topics, including:

  • The information an employer or potential employer may require or exclude on an application;
  • Paid or unpaid leave time;
  • Hours and scheduling; and
  • The use of contractors.

“This bill is just about allowing business to do business,” Gallick said. “It prevents a city or a political subdivision from attaching cumbersome ordinances which can handcuff the business’s productivity, especially in the hospitality industry.”

Supporters include the U.S. Chamber, the American Hotel and Lodging Association, and the Missouri Hotel and Lodging Association.

Luke Reed, director of legislative affairs for the Missouri Chamber, also testified in support.

“We believe that employment laws should be uniform statewide,” Reed said. “We believe that’s best for business.”

A similar bill, SB 325, is sponsored by Sen. Ben Brown (R-Washington).
