Missouri Chamber backs plan to legalize sports betting

Missouri is poised to join the growing number of states that allow gambling on sports.

After years of discussion, sports and gambling stakeholders appear to have found a compromise that is now working its way through the legislative process in Jefferson City — and is supported by the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

In recent years, many of Missouri’s neighboring states, and 32 states overall, have legalized sports betting. Supporters say gambling can add to the excitement of sports, with state-sanctioned wagering creating a safe, regulated experience. It would also create a new revenue source for businesses and the state.

As the idea has been considered in Missouri, lawmakers have taken time to ensure that any new law would not harm the state’s successful sports franchises. Lawmakers have also worked to develop a workable tax structure and set aside funds to combat gambling addiction.

Legislation being considered in 2022 also ensures the state’s casino industry and betting websites are part of the balance.

This comprehensive approach has led to united support for legislation passing this year. The Missouri Chamber has testified in support of sports betting legislation in both the Missouri House and Senate. Several bills are currently under consideration.
