The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry supports a new workforce development tool aimed at helping Missourians achieve long-term self-sufficiency by better coordinating existing state and community resources.
SB 1062, sponsored by Sen. Jill Carter (R-Granby), would establish the Hope Missouri Office within the Office of Administration. The office would help participants identify personal goals, develop individualized plans, address barriers and connect with community resources. Participating state agencies would work together to serve families holistically and support pathways to meaningful employment, including referrals for job placement and vocational training.
During a hearing before the Senate Government Efficiency Committee, Carter said the proposal is modeled after successful programs in other states.
“I believe we don’t have a resource problem, we have a connectivity problem,” Carter said. “This would close that gap, creating synergy with not-for-profits, churches and community members. The Department of Social Services is excited about this program as well.”
Missourians 18 and up could participate in Hope Missouri. State departments and agencies would be required to participate using existing resources and staff.
“The beauty of it is, we have an ebb and flow in legislative leadership,” Carter added. “This would be housed in an office with continuity in leadership.”
Missouri Chamber Vice President of Government Affairs Jared Hankinson testified in support of the bill, noting the strong results seen in other states.
“We see this as a workforce development and economic development tool,” Hankinson said. “Streamlining efficiencies within government is something the Missouri Chamber is happy to support.”
