Missouri Mathematics and Science Coalition

Million Women Mentors

Million Women Mentors (MWM) is a national movement with the goal of providing millions of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) mentoring relationships to girls and women. MWM strives to help them choose, persist and succeed in STEM programs and careers.  MWM is an initiative of STEMconnector in collaboration with 60+ national partners, 45+ corporate sponsors, and 43+ state teams.  The Missouri Mathematics and Science Coalition, in partnership with KC STEM Alliance, is the lead organization for both Missouri and Kansas. The Coalition hopes to help engage over 8,000 mentors over the next year, raising the bar from the 2017 goal of 7,000.

We know that growth in STEM jobs over the last 10 years has been three times greater than non-STEM jobs. Today 80% of the fastest growing occupations depend on STEM skills, but women are all too often largely left out of this conversation. We see the need to get more girls and young women interested in STEM and help retain women in STEM careers, as interest in STEM for girls is declining. Nearly 50% of women drop out of STEM careers in the first 10 years.
