Leadership in Practice
The best way to develop leadership skills is to practice, practice, practice. And for four days each June that is exactly what Missouri’s brightest rising sophomore student leaders do in the Leadership in Practice program hosted by the Missouri Chamber Foundation. Held on the campus of Westminster College in Fulton, the program engages students in profound ways by putting them through hands-on simulations and activities with experienced business and community leaders from around the state. Developed more than 20 years ago to cultivate and instill critical leadership, entrepreneurship and life skills to students throughout Missouri. Rotating across the state, this year’s program will be held on the campus of Westminster College in Fulton.
The program is divided into five focus areas: global leadership, civic leadership, economic leadership, ethical leadership and personal leadership. The key to the training is that students learn by participating in activities, simulations and small group discussions. They are mentored by experienced business, civic and education leaders from across the state, imparting real world knowledge to help guide their development during the forum. Students evaluate their leadership skills based on what they learn and then set goals on how to improve those skills.
Leadership In Practice is designed to provide young people with the opportunity to learn the characteristics of excellent leadership and apply these skills in their own lives as they go back to their high schools and communities. Read an overview of our 2017 program.
