Media campaign highlights two key legal reform bills
The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry has teamed up with the U.S. Chamber’s Institute for Legal Reform on a special media campaign targeting two key reform bills.
The radio commercials spotlight Missouri’s status among the worst states in the nation for legal climate. The Institute for Legal Reform currently ranks Missouri 42 in the nation. The American Tort Reform Associate calls Missouri a “Judicial Hellhole.”
Missouri’s General Assembly sought to address this problem by passing Senate Bill 591 and Senate Bill 847, bills supported by the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Senate Bill 591, sponsored by Sen. Mike Parson, a Republican from Bolivar, would require that people who testify as expert witnesses must actually have expert knowledge of the topic. Senate Bill 847 would clarify that in injury lawsuits, plaintiffs can only recover the costs of the actual medical expenses they incurred. That bill was sponsored by Sen. Ed Emery, a Republican from Lamar.
However, Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed both bills. The Missouri Chamber and the Institute for Legal Reform created a media campaign pushing a veto override.
